A Journey Through the Past by Neil Mackay

I recently came across a beautiful book which will appeal to all those with an interest in Brora, Clyne.

Neil Mackay, a great, great grandson of Neil Mackay and Jane Sutherland of Clyne, has put together a book which tells much of the history of Clyne from early days till the end of the Second World War.  A few of the items in Neil's index will give you a better feel for the book than my words!

  • The Sutherland Family
  • The Clearances and Land Relocation
  • Early Improvements and the build up of Brora
  • Doll Schools and History
  • Church History
  • Brora Coal, Salt and Bricks 1598 - 1974
  • Clynelish Distillery & Quarry
  • Sputie Stone Quarry
  • Wool Mill
  • Development of Golf Road area
  • Brora Beach & Brora River
  • Followed by an autobiography and more information on his own family

The front cover shows the new main road bridge.  Walking his dog is John Ross and man on bike is the Estate ground officer.  I heartily recommend this lovely book which I very much enjoyed reading.

The book can be purchased at a cost of £15 UK plus £3 first class UK post - if you live in the UK and wish to purchase please contact Jim & Kathleen Cunningham in Brora by email - CLICK HERE.  Please mention this website when writing to Jim.
