'The appearance of the town of Dornoch will be rather disappointing to the visitor who has preconceived notions of it, formed by thoughts of what the town of an extensive shire such as Sutherland ought to be. The Cathedral is the most interesting object of antiquity'. (Tourists' Guide, 1883, Hew Morrison)
