Natives of Sutherland
In 2002 I received a lovely letter from a contact in Ontario, Canada, together with photographs, including one of the stones which shows on my own family tree (Ann Grant). My contact, a very distant cousin, drove a long way to do this and wrote: “It is a pleasure for me to send you pictures of the Old Log Cemetery in Zorra township. It really is a wonderful, old cemetery, located well in the countryside. Many of those buried there were natives of Sutherland-shire. A beautiful final resting place, it is bordered by field and forest, and our morning there was made more pleasurable with the songbirds singing just over our heads. I wondered if the scenery had changed much over the years, and if this view was how my ancestor had seen the land. You almost feel like you have gone back in time, endless fields and very few, if any, cars. We found it to be very serene and peaceful. You would be pleased to visit someday and see for yourself the wonderful place that our ancestors were buried in”. I was delighted to see on the photographs the words, "Native of Sutherlandshire, Scotland".

This photograph of the Old Log burial ground shows a small brick structure, next to some gravestones in the back part of the cemetery. This is actually a miniaturised version of the original church that stood on that spot and is here as a commemoration.
This letter and photographs made me wonder just how many people, around the world used the words "Native of Sutherlandshire, Scotland" on their gravestone.
Quite a collection followed - from all parts of Canada & New Zealand. Some came with photographs, some with only the transcription but all are of interest. Once the collection grows I will compile an index to share with you and will also give copies to the local heritage societies in Sutherland.
This collection is ongoing and growing - if you can contribute please do. Send your photographs with details of the cemetery to me by email.
